“This guide is only for the salaried individual and other taxpayers; not suitable for the companies.”
How to fill up income tax return form in Bangladesh
I think you are a salaried individual and want to pay tax for the first time in Bangladesh. So, it is necessary to know how to fill up an income tax return form in Bangladesh. For that, you might have a TIN and national ID no.
First, let’s introduce the different pages and sections of Bangladesh’s income tax return form. The ideal income tax return form for salaried individuals and other taxpayers has 8 pages with different sections.
- Information of the taxpayer (page 1)
- Statement of income of the assessee (page 2)
- Schedule showing details of the income (page 3)
- Investment tax credit calculation (page 4)
- Statement of assets and liabilities (pages 5 and 6)
- Particulars of expenditures (page 7), and
- Acknowledgement receipt of the income tax return (pages 7 and 8)
I will show (with images) you the step by step process so that you may fill up your income tax return form so quickly.
First, you should provide the basic information on page 1 (the taxpayer’s information). You may leave page 2 (statement of income of the assessee).
Now, you should provide the details of your income on page 3 (schedule showing details of income). At the same time, you may also fill up page 4 (investment tax credit) with appropriate data and documents.
You may leave pages 5 and 6 (statement of assets and liabilities) by this time. Jump to page 7 (first portion) and provide the particulars of expenditures.
It is easy to calculate and fill up pages 5 and 6. Finally, you should fill up the information on page 7 (lower portion) and page 8 (acknowledgement).
Income tax return form fills up in Bangladesh details with example
It will be better if I provide an example and show you how to fill up the income tax return form in Bangladesh. But, make sure you have the necessary documents and data to fill up the income tax return form perfectly.
So, let’s know what the necessary documents that you need to fill up the income tax return are –
- Last year’s salary document provided by your organization or government,
- Proof of tax deduction or collection at source,
- National identification card photocopy,
- Photocopy of TIN identification number,
- Recent photo of the taxpayer,
- Investment tax credit documents, and
- Previous year acknowledgement receipt of the income tax return (if you paid tax the previous year)
I hope you have collected all the documents mentioned above and now let’s see the example of the salaried individual.
Example: suppose one individual receives 30150 taka monthly with two bonuses in a year. This individual also receives 10000 taka house rent per month and 15000 taka medical allowance in a year.
The contribution to the provident fund is 35000 taka per year. Again, the benevolent fund and group insurance contribution is 1500 taka per year.
Now, let’s calculate the income tax and fill up this individual’s income tax return form.
Information of the taxpayer
On the first page, you should provide a taxpayer’s basic information, including name, national identifying number, and TIN (taxpayer identification number).
Before that, you should get a checkmark on the universal self if you are an individual taxpayer. You will see the circle and taxes zone in your taxpayer identification number. According to your TIN, you should always provide the circle and taxes zone in 5 no a and b.
“If your organization already pays source tax to another circle and taxes zone, it will not a problem.”
According to your national identification number, you should also provide the other information on page 1, like the father’s name, mother’s name, date of birth, and permanent address. It is not mandatory to provide the VAT registration number on page 1.
I have shown you the form on page 1 that fills up with the necessary information (demo information) in the picture.
Schedule showing the details of income
You will see three schedules that show income details – schedule 1 is for salaries, schedule 2 is for house property income, and schedule 3 is for the investment tax credit. Suppose the exampled individual has only one income source: salary.
It would help if you (taxpayer) did not fill up every section of this table on page 3. Please, provide only the necessary information that applies to your income.
Here, in the example, the individual has basic pay (30150), house rent allowance (10000×12), medical allowance (15000), naboborsho allowance (6000), and two bonuses (60300). So, let’s fill-up the form with the value of these points.
The table shows the total amount of salary of 563100 taka. Again, the exempted income is 141000 taka as the house rent, medical, and naboborsho allowances are not included in taxable income.
Here, the table also shows the net taxable income is 422100 taka (basic pay and bonuses are the taxable income).
I hope you can perfectly fill this page 3 schedule 1 (salary). If you have house property income (schedule 2), please provide the appropriate data and calculate the net income (point no 3).
Investment tax credit
You should fill up schedule 3 (investment tax credit) on page 4. In the example, the individual contributes to the provident fund, benevolent fund, and group insurance premium. But, if you have a deposit scheme, life insurance premium, and other investments, please fill-up the form with value.
If you show more investment, there is a great chance to get taxes credit. But, the investment is restricted to 60000 takas per year.
Here, in the table, the individual only contributes to the provident fund (35000 taka) and benevolent (1500 taka). So, the total investment credit for the individual is 36500 taka.
You should keep in mind that if you want to show the investment, you might provide the proper documents or certificates.
Here, the picture shows the investment tax credit for the exampled individual.
List of documents furnished
In this part of the tax return form, you should provide some of the basic documents. Here, I will enlist some of the common documents or certificates for the taxpayer.
Normally, you should provide the following documents –
- Photocopy of the national identity card (NID) of the taxpayer,
- Tax identification number certificate photocopy,
- Picture of the taxpayer (one copy),
- Salary document provided by your organization,
- Document on tax deducted or collected at source (from your organization),
- Previous year acknowledge receipt of income tax return (if you have),
- Any other investment documents (if you provide any investment)
The documents or certificates will be attached at the end of the form. Again, the picture of the taxpayer will be added to the front page (page no 1) on the specific location.
The table shows the list of the document furnished part of page 4.
How to fill the particulars of the expenditure of the income tax return in Bangladesh
Sometimes more questions arise should I fill every single point of expenditure or place the total cost. You may choose anyone – either you may provide the details of expenditure or the total cost.
My recommendation is to provide the details of particulars of expenditure. Here in the table, I will also provide the details of the particulars of expenditure.
Now, let’s see how to fill up the particulars of expenditure in the income tax return form in Bangladesh. I will show the basic expenditures of an individual who lead a simple life in Bangladesh.
In the example, the personal and food expense is 225000 taka. Again, the accommodation expense for the individual is 120000 taka. The gas and electricity bill for the individual is 9000 and 6000 taka; respectively.
There is a festival, and another certain expense is about 40000 taka. So, the total expenditure for the individual taxpayer is 400000 taka.
You should also provide the taxpayer’s name and tax identification number on the first portion of this page 7. Again, please provide the signature with the date of income tax return submission in the signature space.
How to fill up a statement of assets and liabilities on the income tax return form?
Now, let’s move to page number 5 (statement of assets and liabilities). First, you should fill up the basic points like the date, taxpayer name, and tax identification number of the taxpayer.
If you have a limited company’s business capital and shareholding, please input your data on the number 1. Again, if you have no business or shareholding in the limited company, avoid this section (N/A).
Some taxpayers may have a non-agricultural property (land or house) and agricultural property. They will provide the legal data on options 2 and 3. But, in our example, the taxpayer has no non-agricultural and agricultural properties.
Option 4 is important for you as you may have the shares, saving certificate, saving scheme, a loan, or other investment. Please, provide the perfect information on the investment in option 4.
In the example, the taxpayer only has a provident fund, benevolent fund, and group insurance premium investment. He has only 36500 taka investment tax credit which will go under the other investment point.
Again, if you purchase any motor vehicles, please put the data on option 5.
Option 6 – 9 of the income tax return form (page 5) is important. You should fill up this part so carefully, and you may take help from an expert.
Statement of the assets
In the jewellery option (6), you may show the quantity of gold you previously had from your parents, relatives, or others. It will be better if you only state the quantity of jewellery or gold. I never suggest you provide the market cost of your jewellery as they change regularly.
Here, I will only provide the quantity of the jewellery for the individual taxpayer.
But, in the furniture and electric equipment, you may provide the amount of taka. Suppose the taxpayer has the furniture and electronic equipment cost around 250000 taka and 200000 taka, respectively.
This part of the income tax return form is also important (page 5; option 9). If you have a small amount of money, it will be better to show it as cash. But, if there is more money, you should show the cash in the bank (of course, you need the statement if you show the cash in the bank).
Again, you may show some money (cash in hand) under the other deposit option.
In the example, the taxpayer has only 500000 taka cash in hand.
So, the total cash asset and other (6 -9) is 900000 taka. Again, the total asset, including the cash, furniture, electronics, provident fund, benevolent fund, and group insurance premium, is 1063100 taka (36500+900000+126600).
How does this 126600 taka come? Well, here you should provide a short note; after deducting the personal expenditure (including provident fund, benevolent fund, and group insurance premium), you have only 126600 taka cash on your hand.
In the picture, I showed the income tax return form that fills with the information on page 5.
How to fill up income tax return form in Bangladesh page no 6
Now, let’s see how to fill up the income tax return form in Bangladesh, page no 6. Please provide the data and calculate the total assets if you have any other assets.
Here, the taxpayer has no other asset, and the total asset of the example individual is 1063100 taka.
If you have any liabilities, you should provide a details description of the value. There are four options where you may provide the information on the liabilities –
- Mortgages secured on property or land,
- Unsecured loans of the taxpayer,
- A bank loan of the taxpayer, and
- Other different liabilities
Now, you should calculate the total amount of the liabilities.
But, here, the taxpayer has no liabilities, so this option does not apply to the taxpayer.
Now, the options 12 – 18 are also important; let’s put all the value and make the difference 0 between serial 16 and 17 (total accretion of wealth and sources of fund).
Final calculation (option 12 – 18)
The net wealth as of the last date of this income year is the difference between total assets and total liabilities. As here in the example, the individual has no liabilities, so the net wealth as of the last date of this income year (serial 12) is 1063100 taka.
Now, let’s fill up serial no 13; the net wealth as of the last date of the previous income year is the total asset of motor vehicles, jewellery, furniture, electronics, cash in hand, and cash in hand after the particulars of the expenditures.
Here, the net wealth as of the last date of the previous income year is 900000 taka. So, I will provide the value in serial no 13.
Now, let’s see the accretion in the wealth of the taxpayer. The accretion in wealth is the difference between serial no 12 and 13. That means the value between the net wealth on the last date of this income year and the net wealth on the last date of the previous income year.
In the example, the individual’s accretion in wealth is 163100 taka only.
In serial 15, you should provide the family expenditure you have already calculated on page 7 (particulars in expenditures). Again, you should also provide the number of dependent persons in the serial number 15.
So, here the family expenditure for the taxpayer is 400000 taka. Suppose the taxpayer has only 2 dependent people in his family.
Serial no 16 shows the total accretion of the wealth of the taxpayer. And it will be calculated with the total value of serial 14 and 15). So, the taxpayer has 563100 taka (accretion of wealth).
Fill up serial 17 and 18
In serial 17, you need to show the sources of the taxpayer’s income. You have already had all the information to fill this serial no 17.
It would be best to input the value of shown return income and tax exempted and tax-free income. Let’s see the table where I provide the value of the taxpayer (both shown return income and tax exempted and tax-free income).
The shown return income of the individual is 422100 taka. Again, the individual’s tax exempted and tax-free income is 141000 taka.
So, the whole fund source for this taxpayer is 563100 taka.
Now, let’s make the difference between serial no 16 and 17. The value between serial 16 and 17 is 0 (put it in serial 18).
Finally, you should provide your signature and date at the bottom of page 6.
“Assets and liabilities of self, spouse (if she or he is not an assesse), minor children and dependent’s to be shown in the above statement.”
Again, you may use a separate sheet if needed.
Statement of income of the assessee
Let’s jump to page number 2, where you should fill up the statement of income of the assessee. As per the information, I will fill up the serial 1, 13, 14, 16 – 19. But, these may vary from the individual (taxpayer) to individual and depends on the income and assets.
Let’s see from the example of the taxpayer –
Here, the taxpayer has only the salary (option 1), which is about 422100 taka (taxable). Again, the tax leviable on total income is 7210 taka. How have I calculated this 7210 taka for serial 13?
The total net taxable income of the individual is 422100 taka. But, the male individual has 350000 taka tax exempted. So, this amount of money will be deducted from 422100 taka. You will find 72100 taka in total net taxable income.
The tax leviable on total income will be 10%, which means you should pay (72100×10%) = 7210 taka.
Again, the tax debate is 5475 taka for this individual, but how? It is calculated based on the total investment of the individual or taxpayer in this specific year.
Here, the taxpayer has only 36500 taka investments. So, the individual will get tax debate (36500×15%) = 5475 taka (put on the serial 14).
Now, calculate the payable tax (serial or option no 15). The total payable tax will be the differences between serial no 13 and 14. So, here, you will find only 1775 taka payable tax for the individual. But, you should pay a minimum of 5000 taka tax in Bangladesh.
Thus, it (must show)would be best if you showed the total 5000 taka payable tax in serial no 16 (shown in the picture).
Tax payment options
There are four different options for tax payment –
- Tax deducted or collected from the sources (performed by your organization),
- Advanced tax payment (for this, you should add the challan copy),
- Tax paid based on the return, and
- Adjustment of the tax refund (if any)
If your organization has already deducted or collected money from you every month, you should submit the proper documentation. Again, the tax paid based on the return is the best option to pay the taxes.
You may use the challan, pay-order, bank draft, or cheque to pay the payable taxes. I prefer to pay with the challan payment option.
Here, the taxpayer pays the tax with the bank draft (you should provide the document and bank draft number and amount of money – minimum 5000 taka).
Serial 17 is optional for you; if there is any difference between serial 15 and 16, put the value. Again, in serial 18, you should provide the amount of tax exempted and tax-free income; for this taxpayer, it is 141000 taka.
If you pay the income tax in the last assessment year, you should fill the serial 19.
The verification option (bottom of page 2) is also important for the taxpayer. Let’s fill up all the information properly at the verification part of page number 2.
How to fill up the acknowledgement receipt of Bangladesh’s income tax return form?
Let’s see how to fill up the acknowledgement receipt section of Bangladesh’s income tax return form. For this, you should again provide the basic information of you (taxpayer) on page 7 at the bottom section. Again, you need to fill in the information required at the bottom section of page 8.
So, on page number 7 (bottom section), you should provide your name, assessment year, tax identification number, tax zone, and circle perfectly. Here, I also filled up this section with the accurate data of the individual taxpayer.
Again, let’s fill up the section from page 8 (bottom). Here, the total income shown in return is 422100 taka for the taxpayer. The tax paid is taka 5000, and the net wealth of the taxpayer is 1063100 taka.
There is no need (page 8) to fill up the date of receipt of the return and serial no in the return register. But don’t forget to fill in the return and your signature at the bottom with the seal.
